Tell me about Jesus

Have you ever heard people talk about the gospel? Well gospel means good news and it is God’s message to you – the good news we find in the bible about God’s love for you.  At the very centre of this true story is Jesus, he is the main character and his role in the story is what makes it good news for us.

If we were to make a very broad synopsis of the bible – the good news, then we would perhaps explain it like this.

In the beginning God created everything and his favourite bit of creation was us – mankind. The bible says that God is the embodiment of love and his greatest delight was directing all his love upon us – the sons and daughters that he has created.

We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them. 1 John 4:16

He made us so that we could have relationship with Him, to talk with him and trust in him and so that both we and He could enjoy the experience of being close. This was a great plan but the very first man and woman messed it up by disobeying God’s instructions and choosing to do what they wanted instead. Since that day each one of us has done the very same thing – we have chosen to rebel against God and do things our own way instead – the bible calls this Sin. Sin exists as an obstacle between us and God and as a result we are unable to have relationship with God.  Furthermore, the result of this broken relationship is that not only in life, but also when we die we are separated from God. The bible says that ‘For the wages of sin is death..’ (Romans 6:23)

God hates sin but he loves us and despite our turning away from him he sent his son Jesus Christ to resolve the situation.

This is the good news of the gospel - that Jesus was born, lived a sinless life and chose to give himself to be crucified for crimes he did not commit. In this way he died in our place and took upon himself the punishment that we all deserve because of our sin. He died and then three days later he was resurrected and rose to life again. In fact the full verse we mentioned before from Romans 6:23 says 'For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.'

This is why Jesus is the centre of this story. He changed everything with his life and death. Now, because of his sacrifice the bible says that we can come confidently back into relationship with God, to talk with him, trust in him and enjoy experiencing his presence close to us. All the sin that stood between us and God, and the consequences of that sin are removed and placed upon Jesus instead. This means that we are free if we only accept this gift that Jesus offers us and express to him the deep regret and sorrow we feel that he had to suffer our punishment and that we put that barrier between ourselves and God by our sin in the first place.

Bethshan church, and every Christian church, exists primarily to spread and share this good news and to make Jesus known. He is the very centre of the greatest story you will ever hear a story whose truth will change your life.
